Berkshire Hathaway's investment in TSMC raised eyebrows as it's unusual for Buffett to invest outside the US, and the stake in TSMC was substantial.
However, it's not surprising as TSMC is a clear leader in semiconductor manufacturing, with a competitive advantage in producing the world's most advanced chips at scale.
Yet, Berkshire sold 86% of its TSMC position within six months, indicating a change in Buffett's investment thesis.
It's unlikely to be due to a chip demand slowdown or his deputies' decision.
One possible reason is the rising geopolitical risk between the US and China, with TSMC caught in between.
The US has been more successful in influencing TSMC than China, preventing TSMC from selling high-end chips to Chinese firms, including Huawei.
China is the world's largest importer of semiconductor chips, and losing that part of the business could hurt TSMC's revenue.
TSMC is also investing more money to build new plants in the US to reduce geopolitical risk.
Given Buffett's aversion to risk, the additional measures and increasing geopolitical risk could have led him to rethink his TSMC investment.
